Every moment is the beginning of a new journey. Right now, in the midst of this pandemic, we are all intensely aware of uncertainty in the face of the unknown. This is the experience of the Fool, the first card in the Tarot deck. The Fool is the embodiment of not knowing what comes next. The Fool is the zero, not the one. It is the Buddhist concept Śūnyatā, which can be translated as no-thing-ness. In Arabic the word Sifr صفر means empty. Virtually all cosmological myths speculate about what preceded the creation of the world. It is written in Genesis (Bereshit 1:2) ‘the earth was without form and void’  וְהָאָ֗רֶץ הָֽיְתָ֥ה תֹ֨הוּ֙ וָבֹ֔הוּ those last words in Hebrew (tohu v’vohu) imply chaos and the abyss. From this abyss (space/place/womb) arises all potential creation.

A Tarot deck is a symbolic universe holding every combination, permutation, and possibility. It is a representation of the all of us. Working with the energies of the deck, we grow in understanding and connection to the Great Mystery. Tarot is a line of inquiry that calls upon this Mystery, whatever you choose to call it. Tarot is an esoteric path that can lead to better comprehension of who/what we are and of our purpose in this life. Each person’s spiritual journey is unique. Tarot can serve as a marvelous guidebook on that journey.

The more you let go of the need to be the individual controlling the outcome, the more the field, which is self-intelligent, self-aware, and self-transcendent, can move through you.

A traditional misconception is that the Tarot is a tool for prediction. When we create a Tarot spread, what we are actually seeing is a snapshot of this moment in time only. It can feel like the future, because we exist for ourselves largely in the past. We do not recognize the present moment. What we see in the now, we often call the future. But all cards are pulled for a spread in a specific moment in time and can never represent more than that moment. Ask questions that are future oriented, and you will receive only the seeds that are available within this moment. We choose what seeds to water.
